There are several types of&nbsp;<em>Plasmodium<\/em>, some cause uncomplicated symptoms, and others can cause very severe symptoms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"595\" height=\"746\" src=\"https:\/\/missionmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/parasito.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/missionmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/parasito.webp 595w, https:\/\/missionmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/parasito-239x300.webp 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person with Malaria may have no symptoms, may feel a little unwell and have some, or may feel very unwell and have several symptoms caused by the substances and toxins that the parasite accumulates in the person's blood. From the mosquito bite, it can take between 1 week to 1 month for the first symptoms to appear, depending on the parasite species. With&nbsp;<em>P. falciparum<\/em>&nbsp;, symptoms appear early and it is responsible for more than 99.9% of lethal episodes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"895\" src=\"https:\/\/missionmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/sintomas.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-985\" srcset=\"https:\/\/missionmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/sintomas.webp 1000w, https:\/\/missionmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/sintomas-300x269.webp 300w, https:\/\/missionmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/sintomas-768x687.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Some of the symptoms may include: chills, intermittent fever, respiratory distress, cough, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, yellow skin and eyes, dark urine, seizures, sweats, fatigue, weakness, confusion, decreased level of consciousness, coma, or death.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-stretch has-ast-global-color-4-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);flex-basis:50%\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Healthcare workers may physically find:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enlarged spleen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enlarged liver.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And in laboratory tests:&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hiperparasitemia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hypoglycemia.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anemia (can be severe if recurrent infections occur).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-ast-global-color-4-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);flex-basis:50%\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consequences that individuals may suffer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People, especially children, may experience neurological defects: difficulty in movement, difficulty in speaking, deafness, blindness. Multiple organ failure in adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mood disorders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discrimination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Isolation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling unmotivated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty in self-care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of energy to take care of the family.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of energy to take care of the house.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dropping out of school or work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poverty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depression.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasites of the genus&nbsp;<em>Plasmodium<\/em>&nbsp;and transmitted by the infected female&nbsp;<em>Anopheles<\/em> mosquito.
